Formulation and pre-clinical evaluation of herbal toothpaste for management of oral diseases
Dental problems are a big challenge in Uganda. Many people are losing their teeth through extraction yet medicinal plants can be used to treat them. The use of herbal medicines in management of diseases continues to gain momentum due to their availability, low cost, perceived effectiveness and cultural acceptability across ethnic backgrounds. Dental procedures like root canal therapy are too expensive to be afforded by the local community. As a result, we seek to formulate a herbal remedy to treat tooth decay and prevent unnecessary tooth extraction. This will save our poor communities the costs of tooth extractions and the complications that come along with it. This project, to be undertaken at the Natural Products Research and Innovation Centre (NaPRiC) is a unique collaboration between the private sector through CDH Herbal Solutions Ltd and Busitema University. The immediate output of the project will be formulated herbal toothpaste/ remedy for management of oral diseases. These will further be developed into novel drugs for management of oral diseases.
